I wasn't going to have a bet in this race but I think there is some value in the w/o Kauto or Denman market. I like the look of RARE BOB who is 25/1 in this market. He won the 3m novice chase at Punchestown beating the likes of Joncol, Gone To Lunch and Cooldine. Cooldine was probably nursing his RSA hangover so it probably wasn't his true running, but Rare Bob was very good that day and Dessie Hughes nominated the GC as the target afterwards.

He's not been seen yet this season but he's been entered for the GC and a 2m chase at Fairyhouse this weekend so the horse must be ok. I was quite impressed with the tactics employed by Flood and Hughes on Schindler's Hunt in the Punchestown Gold Cup at the end of last season. Basically the horse was ridden for second knowing that there were question marks over his stamina at 3m and that Notre Pere would be virtually impossible to beat. Instead of taking Notre Pere on they dropped the horse out and picked off beaten horses up the straight to finish second. I think they could employ similar tactics on Rare Bob in the GC. His stamina isn't suspect but they all have a mountain to climb to beat the big two so I can see him being ridding to finish 3rd.

There must be some value in backing something else Ante Post in the field. Kauto and Denman are not bombproof, there may well be an up and coming chaser yet to fully show his true class.

Its Denman for me after his very very impressive win in the Hennessy, fought off challange after challange a sign of a great horse. Only beaten last year as he was not truely fit but done wonders in the circumstances to come 2nd. Kauto Star sometimes gets very close to those fences and could easily make a blunder in the KG or Gold Cup this year.

I'd love to see Denman win again. I appreciate Kauto's achievements have been huge but I've rarely seen wins as impressive as Denman's Gold Cup in 2008 and Hennessy in 2009. I don't think I could back either of them at the current prices and not sure the possible opponents make much appeal at this stage so I will just be cheering for 'The Tank'

At the moment it is very difficult to get away from Kauto Star.

There is going to have to be either a huge decline from the dual champion or a massive improvement from something else in the pack, or both.

Cooldine looks like he may have the best chance of giving Kauto a battle, but until we see him back on the track in the John Durkan we can only speculate as to how he will fair in his 2nd season over fences. If I had to nominate one against 'King Kauto' it would be last seasons RSA winner.
